Meet Our Legal Team

Senior Associate

Being a rural lawyer brings both great challenge and meaning.
Often it’s not the sort of thing you learn in law school, but I love it.

Following on from his grandfather and his father, Peter had been interested in the law from a young age. He always enjoys interacting with people and helping them solve problems. He obtained his law degree from Macquarie University.

Peter has an impressive 54 years of legal experience. Before the amalgamation with Gordon Garling Moffitt in 1995, Peter was a sole practitioner in Harney and Moffitt, located in Grenfell. Harney and Moffitt was his father’s firm.

In mid 1995 Peter was approached by Eris Gleeson and Joe Lynch of Gordon Garling Giugni from Young with a view to amalgamating our two firms, which was an attractive proposition for him, running a busy sole practice.

Peter has been with Gordon Garling Moffitt for 26 years. He specialises in family succession planning, wills and estates, all areas of conveyancing, especially rural and commercial conveyancing, local government, liquor licencing and is generally “Mr Fixit”.

He is currently enjoying not having the responsibility of being a partner at the firm, knowing that the firm is in good hands with the current partnership, which includes his daughter Rachael Power.

Peter stays involved in numerous charitable/not-for-profit organisations including being honorary solicitor for them. In June 2014 Peter was made a member of the Order of Australia (OAM) for his services to the Weddin Shire. As chair of the Weddin Health Council, Peter’s main focus now is the proposed redevelopment of the Grenfell Hospital/MPS.

Outside of law, Peter has always been a rugby tragic. He also enjoy keeping fit with jogging, gym work and swimming and has competed in 22 City2Surf events.

When asked what advice Peter would give to a young lawyer just starting out he replied:

Be prepared for hard, but rewarding, work. There are are no short cuts to producing a good result for your client. “

Peter Moffitt

Peter also believes that in order to be a great lawyer you have to be able to show compassion and empathy, especially when clients have experienced trauma.
